Analyzing the potential health and economic impact for states of reducing obesity rates

This grant supports Trust for America's Health (TFAH) in analyzing the impact on reducing disease rates and health care costs of lowering obesity rates across the United States. This work will advance progress toward achieving the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's six policy priorities for reversing the childhood obesity epidemic. TFAH will contract with the National Heart Forum (NHF) to conduct the analysis, based on a model NHF created for a study--published in the Lancet in 2011--on the health and economic burden of projected obesity trends in the United States and United Kingdom. This project will examine the potential reduction in disease rates and health care costs in each country that could be achieved by reducing the body mass index by 5 percent. The Foundation may engage external experts on obesity and economic analysis to review NHF's analysis prior to publication. The Foundation's Research and Evaluation unit will manage any contracts or grants needed to support such a review. Deliverables will include: (1) research that TFAH will incorporate into the 2012 edition of the annual report F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America's Future, which is co-branded by RWJF and TFAH; and (2) Web-based resources for obesity-prevention advocates, public health officials, and local, state and federal policymakers.
