The Foundation's National Expansion of Playworks: A Program that Promotes Physical Activity and Play at Schools was designed to re-engineer recess time enabling children in low-income elementary and middle schools to participate in structured play opportunities that transform the students, the classroom, the playground, and the school. This grant provides support for the third phase of funding for Playworks, a school-based program that uses the power of play and physical activity to shift children's behavior in a positive direction and accelerate learning in the classroom. This RWJF funding will be part of a $26.4 million growth-capital campaign to continue to scale the program through 2015-2016. During this phase, Playworks will: (1) complete expansion of its flagship program to 27 cities and 700 schools; (2) expand its business of training school personal to conduct the program to reach 1,000 schools annually; (3) establish financial sustainability in the 27 cities; and (4) launch a movement of at least 10,000 parents, teachers, and principals, to call attention to the value of recess at their own schools and to improve it either through accessing Playworks materials, participating in Playworks events, or connecting with each other to drive change. Playworks anticipates serving 600,000 children by the 2015-2016 school year.
