The Foundation's program, Leadership for Healthy Communities: Advancing Policies to Support Healthy Eating and Active Living, was designed to work with elected and appointed officials to create and promote healthier communities. The American Association of School Administrators (AASA) is an association that focuses on securing the rights of children and school system leaders. AASA's policy intervention will foster environments that are supportive of HEAL policies, educate and engage policymakers on childhood obesity, and provide policymakers with tools, resources and technical assistance to implement HEAL policies through the creation of peer networks. Grant funds will be used to bring together districts with strong competitive foods policies (mentors) with districts interested in creating strong policies (mentees) using in-person and on-line trainings, webinars, conference calls and discussions. AASA will prioritize districts with the following characteristics: districts with high-risk feeder patterns of elementary, middle, and high school students most at-risk in their community; districts with high rates of students receiving free and reduced meals; districts that have indicated they want assistance with strengthening their current policies around competitive foods; and districts with high numbers of students that have been impacted by the current economic climate.
