This project will examine the current Congressional Budget Office's practice of providing 10-year cost estimates for proposed prevention policies and demonstrate the need to extend that window beyond 10 years. The deliverable will be a report that will examine current prevention policies and programs that originally scored low and that will rescore them using a 20- or 25-year window, with the expectation that they will have a different score. These policies will include obesity-related prevention, but will also include broader prevention work. The report will also review the economic benefits of a longer economic approach to prevention policymaking and will make recommendations on how policymakers can obtain alternative long-term scores and incorporate them into policy discussions. Well respected economists who have been part of the policy infrastructure of the federal budget will author the report and distribute it to a broad policy audience, including federal policymakers.
