Preparing at-risk youths for work and careers, 2012-2013
Although the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation became a national philanthropy in 1972 and has operated on a national scale since then, it also has continued funding a limited number of local institutions and projects in the New Brunswick area and throughout New Jersey. It does so in part to honor the legacy of its founder, and in part to recognize the special responsibilities to the communities and the state in which it is located.This grant supports Corner House, Princeton, N.J., in providing 35 economically disadvantaged and minority students with life skills in the context of career exploration, building practical knowledge, employment, and community service. The deliverables, for 15 students in the 9th and 10th grades and 20 in the 11th and 12th grades, will include: (1) weekly group meetings and a job club; (2) an individualized school/job plan; (3) exploration of career choices and participation in job fairs; (4) tours of college campuses and other institutes of higher learning; (5) entry-level positions in part-time employment; (6) apprenticeships; (7) community service; (8) trips to job sites and corporate operations; and (9) exposure to the theater and other cultural events.
