Knowledge of Genetics Deemed Essential for Primary Care Providers

Meetings on the health care implications of the human genome project

The Banbury Center at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory convened two meetings to explore the implications for health care of advances in human genetics:

  • "Human Genetics and Health Care," held in August 1994.
  • "Incorporating Genetics in Medicine and Nursing Education and Practice," held in April 1995.

Key Results

The meetings brought together diverse groups — including practitioners, policymakers, educators, and scientists — and attempted to develop practical recommendations for health care delivery and genetics education for primary care providers.

Summaries of the meetings and four additional articles by meeting participants on specific aspects of the topic were compiled as a book, Toward the 21st Century: Incorporating Genetics into Primary Health Care, published by Cold Spring Harbor Press in July 1997.

The meetings have led to new initiatives and collaborations by participants.

Funding

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) provided a $138,691 grant to support the project.
