New Software Upgrades the Efficiency of School Health Centers
Continued support for the implementation of a standard management information system for school-based health centers
From 1991 to 2000, staff at Children's Hospital in Denver developed and implemented a management information system (MIS) for school-based health centers. They also established a center for providing technical assistance to school-based health systems.
Key Results
- The project team expanded the existing software applications and provided two technical training sessions for school-based health center staff from other locations throughout the country.
- The project team established the National Center For School-Based Health Systems to provide technical assistance to school-based health systems. During the grant period, staff at the center:
- Continued to refine the school-based health center management information system.
- Responded to 300 to 400 calls per month for technical assistance from software users.
- Provided 33 training sessions for school-based health centers and technical assistance to 22 state health departments on how to integrate school-based health center data with their own systems, as well as how to conduct evaluations of their school-based health centers.
- The project team upgraded the management information system software to a Windows-based system.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) supported this project through three grants totaling $836,598:
- One grant of $24,919 to the Children's Hospital Association.
- Two grants totaling $811,679 to the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.
