In July 2002, the Journal of Adolescent Health published a 79-page supplemental issue entitled Adolescent Risk and Vulnerability — Workshop Report.

The Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Health at the University of Minnesota College of Medicine, (directed by this project's director, Robert Blum, M.D., Ph.D.), produced the supplement.

It was devoted to research papers developed for a National Academy of Sciences workshop on adolescent risk and vulnerability held on March 13, 2001 in Washington. The supplement was distributed to the journal's approximately 2,500 subscribers in July 2002.

The supplement included the following articles:

• "Adolescent Risk and Vulnerability: Overview" by Elena O. Nightingale and Baruch Fischhoff.
• "Perceptions of Risk and Vulnerability" by Susan G. Millstein and Bonnie L. Halpern-Felsher.
• "Vulnerability, Risk and Protection" by Robert William Blum, Clea McNeely and James Nonnemaker.
• "Modeling the Payoffs of Interventions to Reduce Adolescent Vulnerability" by Martha R. Burt, Janine M. Zweig and John Roman.
• "Adolescent Vulnerability: Measurement and Priority Setting" by Baruch Fischhoff and Henry Willis.

The text was also made available to members through the society's Web site. The text is available to the public at the Web site of the National Academies Press.

Funding

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) provided partial support for the production of the issue with a $26,000 grant to the Minnesota Medical Foundation.

After the Grant

As a result of the workshop and the response generated by the supplement, the Committee on Adolescent Health and Development of the Board on Children, Youth and Families at the National Research Council is considering a project that would explore reframing "adolescent vulnerabilities" as "youth competencies."
