Health Professionals Learn to Unravel Genetics for Their Patients

National coalition to educate health professionals in genetics

In 1997, the American Nurses Foundation established the National Coalition for Health Professional Education in Genetics, an interdisciplinary group that brings together some 135 organizations to promote health professional education in the area of human genetics.

Subsequently, from December 1999 through August 2003, the Coalition created educational tools and resources, and expanded its interdisciplinary membership.

Key Results

The project achieved the following results:

  • The Coalition became a reliable locus for inquiries and requests for assistance in genetics from the health care field and the community at large.
  • Project staff developed the Core Competencies in Genetics Essential for All Health-Care Professionals.
  • Project staff produced slide sets and lists of educational resources.
  • Project staff developed the coalition's Web site.

Funding

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) provided three grants totaling $734,030 from January 1997 to August 2003 to support the project.
