Health Care Journalists Take Note of Current Issues During 2004 Conference

Fifth national conference of the Association of Health Care Journalists

In 2004, the Association of Health Care Journalists, an organization dedicated to advancing public understanding of health care issues, sponsored a four-day conference designed to improve reporters' knowledge of health care issues.

Key Results

  • The Fifth National Conference of the Association of Health Care Journalists, "Politics, Patients and Products: Hot Spots in '04" took place March 26–29, 2004, in Minneapolis. Approximately 270 journalists, speakers and members of the public attended the conference.

To improve the accuracy and effectiveness of health care journalists' reporting, the conference provided information and training on various health care issues, including genomics, quality of care and mental health.

Several articles detailing conference presentations are available in the May 2004 edition of HealthBeat, the newsletter of the Association of Health Care Journalists. The newsletter can be obtained by contacting the association at (612) 627-4331 or ahcj@umn.edu.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) supported this project through a grant of $25,000. Other private and philanthropic donors, which provided approximately $93,000 in additional funds, included the California HealthCare Foundation, the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

After the Grant

The project ended with the completion of the grant. The sixth national conference is scheduled for March 31–April 3, 2005, in Chapel Hill, N.C.
