Increasing the Demand for and Use of Effective Smoking-Cessation Treatments

Reaping the Full Health Benefits of Tobacco-Control Science and Policy Gains - In Our Lifetime

Smoking cessation efforts were the focus of the current article. The author reviewed tobacco-control initiatives while highlighting the work of the National Consumer Demand Roundtable. The Roundtable was comprised of six funders across disciplines and sectors working in the area of tobacco control.

  • The Roundtable utilized a strategy that involved “science push,” capacity building, and increasing market “pull” or demand as the basis for tobacco-control initiatives.
  • The “science push” involved the provision of science-based guidelines for smoking-cessation prevention and intervention.
  • Capacity building included widening the capacity for systems to provide treatment in the area of smoking cessation.
  • The supply of smoking cessation products and services is greater than the current demand for the products and services.
  • Implementing public health initiatives and enhancing marketing strategies to individuals, as well as intermediaries such as employers and health plans, could increase demand for smoking-cessation services.
