Mapping the Innovation in Correctional Health Care Service Delivery in New York City

Researchers with the John Jay College of Criminal Justice created an electronic database of reentry services available to prisoners returning from New York City's jails to communities in its five boroughs, and mapped these services to determine their accessibility to the returning inmates. A report of their findings, Mapping the Innovation in Correctional Health Care Service Delivery in New York City, was released in spring 2008.

Key Findings

There are significant gaps between where returning inmates live and where most reentry services are located. Most inmates return to impoverished neighborhoods in the Bronx and Brooklyn, while most services are located in Manhattan.
Informational resources available to returning inmates are incomplete and inconsistent.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) provided an unsolicited grant of $98,537 to support this project.
