Field of Work: Hospital organizational culture.
Synopsis of the Work: Transforming Hospital Culture was a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in which 10 hospitals documented their stories of improving their organizational culture, with the goal of helping other hospitals understand how to create and sustain culture change in their institutions.
Meridian Health in Neptune, N.J. was one of the participants. After the merger of its three hospitals, Meridian developed new models of nursing care to improve the practice environment for nurses and the quality of patient care. This sidebar describes the new model, which gave nurses increased authority and support while setting high expectations for nursing practice.
