Making the business case for nursing is becoming increasingly easier as new evidence links inadequate nursing levels to escalating health care costs, declining patient care and employee absenteeism. Drawing on experience gained through New Jersey Nursing Initiative: So a Nurse Will Be There for You, a partnership between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce, the authors share specific facts and speaking points to help nurses communicate the gravity of the shortage to the business community and to health care administrators. The authors argue that nurses cannot solve the impending nurse and nurse faculty shortages alone; forging relationships with the business community and CEOs is imperative.
