Between 2003 and 2008, with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the Health Reporting Unit at National Public Radio (NPR):
- Produced 4,650 health and health care-related stories
- Hired veteran health correspondent Julie Rovner as a full-time reporter, focusing on health care and health policy
NPR is a not-for-profit radio network that produces and distributes programming to more than 860 affiliated stations nationwide.
Key Results:
- Stories about health and health care-related issues aired to a weekly audience of nearly 27 million, primarily through the newsmagazines Morning Edition and All Things Considered, the two most listened-to programs on public radio.
- Visitors to NPR's website viewed story pages relating to health and science at least 500,000 times every month.
- NPR extended the reach of its health reporting through a content-sharing tool that enables anyone to use NPR's content for noncommercial, nonprofit purposes elsewhere on the Web.
