With funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices selected 15 states to focus on preventing childhood obesity through its Healthy Kids, Healthy America program. From New Mexico to New York and South Dakota to Mississippi, each looked at prevention through comprehensive policy approaches initiated by the governor’s office.
Nine states worked on policies for school settings, two others on polices to improve child-care facilities. In four states, the effort centered on coordinated planning and prioritization across multiple agencies.
A new report, “Shaping a Healthier Generation: Healthy Kids, Healthy America State Profiles of Progress,” provides case studies and snapshot summaries from the 15 states. Each account details the step-by-step actions taken and the immediate and longer-term accomplishments.
