In this foreword of the Anthology, the Foundation's President and Chief Executive Officer Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, sets the stage for a discussion about Foundation programs that did not work out as planned. In Volume XIII, three of the chapters examine why certain programs did not meet the Foundation's expectations and draw lessons for future Foundation programming. The fourth chapter is a commentary by Robert G. Hughes, a Foundation vice president and its chief learning officer. Lavizzo-Mourey draws four general lessons of her own from this section of the Anthology that are presented here.
