This guest editorial summarizes recommendations from the 2010 Institute of Medicine report The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. The report came out of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing at the Institute of Medicine, which aims to improve the health care system by strengthening nursing care and leadership.
The report issued recommendations for policy changes at the national, state and local levels. Four recommendations are summarized below.
Key Recommendations:
- Nursing schools should emphasize collaboration with other health professions to create a more flexible and effective workforce.
- Nurses should be able to practice to the full capacity of their training and education. The role of nurse practitioners will be particularly important in primary care as health reform increases the number of Americans with health coverage.
- Nurses should build leadership skills to steer the health system toward better delivery of care.
- A better data collection system is necessary to inform health policy.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and AARP are collaborating to implement the findings of this report by creating the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action. This program will work to move key nursing issues forward at the national, state and local levels.
