This study examines gender differences among leisure time activity and work- or household-related activity and perceptions and behaviors regarding park and recreation facilities.
Public parks and recreational facilities offer Latinos a viable option for physical activity (PA).
Latino participants (N=457) ranging in age from 18 to 69 (M=35 years old), living in Wake County, N.C. completed a questionnaire. The levels of PA ranged from “inactive” to “very hard.” Measures of work/household PA and leisure time PA were analyzed separately. Data analysis compared perceptions of PA, perceptions of facility benefits, visitation patterns, and facility preferences.
Latino obesity levels have reached a crisis. Both genders reported high levels of sedentary activity at recreational facilities highlighting the need for alternate settings for PA among Latinos.
