Field of Work: Improving health by focusing on the social determinants of health
Synopsis of the Work: Latino United Network hosted three meetings for more than two dozen Latino citizen leaders to craft an agenda for developing leadership skills and addressing concerns of the Latino community.
Story Told: This sidebar recounts how Maria Castillo-Couch, PhD, a Neighborhood Specialist for the city of Las Vegas, brought together Latino leaders from very low-income neighborhoods to work on issues such as learning English, building relationships with their government representatives, asserting their rights with their employers, and developing their own leadership skills. “Because these people are perceived as leaders,” she says, “there is a huge potential to improve the lives of the 40,000 or so people within their communities.”
