Working Toward Better Health

For most Americans, employment is the primary source of income, which provides them the opportunity to purchase health insurance and pursue health-promoting behaviors. Healthy workers and their families are likely to have lower medical costs and be more productive, while those with chronic health conditions generate higher costs in terms of absenteeism, disability, and overall reduced productivity.

  • A NewPublicHealth Infographic shows the relationship between employment and health.
  • An RWJF Health Policy Snapshot brief finds that employment can provide numerous benefits critical to maintaining proper health.
  • A Commission to Build a Healthier America issue brief examines how work can affect health, exploring both physical and psychosocial aspects of work as well as work-related opportunities and resources.

On average, #American adults spend nearly half of their waking hours at work
