From 2005 to 2010 the National Library of Medicine oversaw a Public Health Informatics Fellows Training Program at four of its 18 medical informatics training sites in order to catalyze the development of a public health informatics field.

The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) received a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in March 2007 for the development of two required documents for the creation of clinical informatics as a medical subspecialty. This paper examines both the context and purpose of the documents, as well as their role in AMIA's structure.
