Serving as president of The Robert
Wood Johnson Foundation for the past dozen years has been
a privilege, I recognize, and a rare one. The combination
of abundant resources, a supportive Board of Trustees, a
talented and dedicated staff, and creative, hardworking
grantees has made it a pleasure to come to work each morning.
To be sure, the problems we have tried to address are daunting.
We often feel more like Sisyphus than Sir Edmund Hillary.
Still, we remain enthusiastic and committed, because of
our mission, our focus, our realism and our culture. So
it is that, when reviewing one of our program areas, I often
find myself rephrasing Robert Browning, Ah, but a
foundations reach should exceed its grasp, Or whats
a heaven for?
Even better, I like to think that our arms are getting just
a little longer, day by day.
Steven A. Schroeder, M.D.
