2003 Grants and Contracts

The summary of 2003 projects is grouped according to the Foundation’s newly organized Impact Framework structure. Grantmaking activities under these portfolios and objectives are described below.

Targeted Portfolio—centered on nine focused objectives that derive from our goals of assuring that all Americans have access to quality health care at reasonable cost, improving the quality of care and support for people with chronic health conditions, promoting healthy communities and lifestyles, and reducing the personal, social and economic harm caused by substance abuse—tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs. The nine focused fields and their objectives are:

Addiction Prevention and Treatment: To increase and improve treatment for abuse of alcohol and other drugs.

Childhood Obesity*: To reverse the growing epidemic of childhood obesity.

Coverage: To raise public awareness to ensure coverage for all Americans.

Disparities: To reduce racial and ethnic disparities in the quality of health and health care.

End-of-Life Care: To improve care at the end of life.

Nursing: To transform the field of nursing and improve health care at the bedside.

Public Health Leadership and Capacity: To expand the public health system’s capacity and leadership.

Quality: To improve the quality of care for those with chronic conditions, focusing on outpatient settings.

Tobacco: To prevent and alleviate harm caused by tobacco use.

Human Capital Portfolio—centered on attracting, developing and retaining high-quality leadership and a workforce to improve health and health care.

Vulnerable Populations Portfolio—centered on supporting and disseminating innovative community programs that improve and sustain health and health care outcomes for vulnerable populations.

Pioneer Portfolio—centered on seeking and supporting innovative undertakings that could lead to breakthroughs in health and health care.

New Jersey—centered mainly on programs in New Brunswick and the surrounding Middlesex county communities.

Other—centered on funding programs that are consistent with the Foundation’s overall mission but are not aligned with a portfolio or targeted objective.
