Rutgers University to Open Nursing School at Camden Campus

New Jersey-based Rutgers University has announced plans open a nursing school at its Camden campus, the Philadelphia Business Journal reports. The proposed Rutgers School of Nursing-Camden is expected to enroll 300 pre-licensure students and 45 registered nurse students pursuing advanced degrees over a six-year timeframe. Graduate nursing programs are expected in targeted clinical specialties with functional minors designed to address the unique care needs of the southern New Jersey region. Anticipated minors include clinical nursing practice in community health settings and home care. The university also plans to offer a nursing Ph.D. program to address the state's critical shortage of nurse faculty and nurse scientists. Rutgers-Camden currently offers a specialized nursing program through its College of Arts and Sciences that allows R.N.s who have associate's degrees or hospital nursing school diplomas to obtain a bachelor of science in nursing degree. A final plan for school will be presented to the Rutgers Board of Governors, the New Jersey Presidents Council and the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education this fall. Commenting on the program, Rutgers's president Richard McCormick noted that it "signals Rutgers' full commitment to advancing nursing education—and, indeed, the over quality of health care—in southern New Jersey."
