The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has awarded $33 million to expand and improve training for nurses and other health care professionals, AHA News Now reports. Awarded as part of $500 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding provided to HRSA to address workforce shortages, the grants will be distributed under six HRSA programs. Specifically, $19.3 million in scholarships will be provided for disadvantaged full-time health professions students, with a particular emphasis on those who demonstrate financial need; $4.9 million will support schools to establish or expand programs for underrepresented minority students and faculty; $3 million will be earmarked for public health traineeships; and $2.6 million will go toward nursing workforce diversity efforts. In addition, the Health Careers Opportunities program received $2.5 million to help schools and health professions training sites establish or expand programs for disadvantaged students and approximately $810,000 for a program that funds residency programs in dental public health. Commenting on the grants, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius noted that they would "help ensure we grow our health care workforce and give our aspiring doctors, nurses and health professionals the tools and training they need to provide top-quality care to more Americans."
