Nebraska Hospital Partners with Medical School in India on Student, Faculty Exchange

The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) has announced plans to partner with a medical school in India to exchange students, medical residents and faculty, KCAU-TV reports. The educational partnership with Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad, India, will help exchange students learn about diseases that are not native to their countries and how to care for patients in resource-poor environments. Moreover, Osmania Medical College is associated with more than 10 different hospitals that together perform 14,000 major surgeries and nearly 40,000 minor procedures each year, providing a "fertile learning environment for students and resident physicians," according to UNMC professor Chandra Are. In addition, the college has a separate hospital for nearly every specialty, including cancer, tropical diseases, pediatrics, maternity, mental health, chest, eye, ear-nose-throat and rural health. Future plans for the partnership call for it to be expanded to potentially include additional academic units such as the College of Nursing, the College of Dentistry and the School of Allied Health Professions. Currently, UNMC partners with the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing and Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (KCAU-TV, 9/11/09; UNMC release, 9/11/09).
