Florida International University Medical Students Pair with Low-Income Families to Understand Barriers to Health

Students enrolled in the inaugural class of the new medical school at Florida International University are participating in a program that pairs them with a local, low-income family that faces barriers to obtaining health care, ABC News reports. As part of the NeighborhoodHELP program, the students will work with teams of fellow students from nursing and social work programs to observe and support the families throughout their four years of medical school. The students will also be asked to research and help address local public health problems, such as a lack of access to parks for exercise, limited availability of fresh produce and limited transportation options to get to health clinics, "with an eye toward prevention." The program is expected to give students real-life exposure to ethics, cultural understanding and public health policy (Teicher Khadaroo, ABC News, 9/20/09).
