New Measure to Require New York Hospitals to Report Nurse Staffing Ratios

New York Gov. David Paterson (D) has signed into law a bill requiring hospitals to publicly report nurse staffing ratios, Modern Healthcare reports. Under the Nursing Quality Protection Act, hospitals must report the number of R.N.s and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) who provide direct patient care and the ratio of patients to nurses. In addition, hospitals will be required to provide the number of unlicensed personnel who provide direct patient care. The law is scheduled to take effect March 16, 2010. A spokesperson for the Greater New York Hospital Association said that the group will work with the New York Department of Health to implement the legislation. The legislation was endorsed by the New York State Nurses Association, which suggested that the data could eventually serve as a foundation for a nurse-patient ratio law similar to the one in California (Carlson, Modern Healthcare, 9/17/09 [subscription required]; Benson, Crain's New York Business, 9/17/09).
