New England States Partner to Address Nurse Faculty Shortage

New England health officials are joining forces to increase the number of nurse faculty in the region, the Associated Press reports. In addition, the project—which is supported by a $250,000 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant and funding from Tufts Health Plan Foundation and several other stakeholders—aims to add training opportunities and provide incentives for nurses who wish to pursue advanced degrees. However, the AP notes that the funding may be used for anything related to nurse education, including child care or transportation. Student recipients must agree to teach at least one year for every year of funding that they receive. To date, Massachusetts has awarded 17 grants of $10,000 each through the Massachusetts Hospital Association. Rhode Island and New Hampshire have also begun awarding funding in amounts varying from $5,000 to $10,000 annually (AP/South Coast Today, 9/28/09).
