CSU Fullerton Receives Grant to Expand Entry-Level Nursing Offerings

California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) has received a $2 million grant from UnitedHealth Group to help support the university's five-year Expanding Healthcare Access through Nursing project, the Orange County Register reports. Specifically, the grant will help the $3.5 million-project—which seeks to increase the number of graduates from CSUF's nursing program and provide more nursing personnel in underserved and low-income communities—increase capacity in the university's entry-level pathway to the bachelor of science in nursing and master of science in nursing programs from 80 students to 200. According to CSUF's president, 1,300 students last year applied for 46 open slots in the nursing program, adding that the grant "will increase the number of baccalaureate nurses [CSUF] is able to enroll, train, graduate and place in the community over the next five years." According to a release, more than 80 percent of CSUF graduates historically have elected to settle within a 50-mile radius of the university, suggesting that this grant will likely have a significant impact in the community. Commenting on the grant, the chief nursing officer at St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton notes that the "lack of training programs has made it increasingly difficult for qualified individuals enter the profession" (Giasone, Orange County Register, 9/29/09; UnitedHealth Group release).
