Nebraska Community College Launches OTA Program

Nebraska-based Central Community College-Grand Island this fall launched an occupational therapy assistant (OTA) program, the Grand Island Independent reports. Thought to be the only such program in the state, the OTA program prepares students to work with individuals who have suffered an accident or need therapy for a disabling or mental condition. Specifically, OTAs work directly with patients to help them live more independently, most often through adaptation, such as learning to eat with one hand, or compensation, such as teaching a right-handed person to use their left hand. The five-semester OTA program enrolled 17 students this semester, with students attending OTA-specific classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The classes include practical instruction in a test kitchen and bathroom outfitted with various modifications. Students will also take classes including ethics, developmental psychology, structure and function, and arts and crafts, at the Grand Island, Hastings or Columbus campuses, at the Kearney Center or online. Future plans for the OTA program call for it to be expanded to annually include up to 24 students (Reutter, Grand Island Independent, 9/27/09).
