The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio has received $300,000 from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to expand its nursing program next fall, the San Antonio Business Journal reports. Specifically, the university will use the funding to increase enrollment next year by 30 students and hire five additional nursing faculty members. If successful, the school will be eligible to receive an additional $450,000 for the 2011-12 academic year, allowing the school to add an additional 15 students to the program. According to the San Antonio Business Journal, the university received the funding because of its successful efforts recruiting and graduating individuals in the nursing field. The latest award, administered under the board's Professional Nursing Shortage Reduction Program, marks the second time that the university has received funding to support its nursing program. According to statistics provided by the Texas Center for Nursing Workforce Studies, the state will need approximately 25,000 new R.N.s by 2020 to meet anticipated patient demand (San Antonio Business Journal, 10/6/09).
