St. Luke's Hospital & Health Network, Temple University to Partner for Medical School Program

Bethlehem, Pa.-based St. Luke's Hospital & Health Network and Temple University School of Medicine have announced plans for an expanded medical school program, the Lehigh Valley News reports. Currently, St. Luke's provides clinical training for third- and fourth-year medical school students at Temple. However, under the revised plan, a group of 30 second-year Temple medical students will complete classes and train at the new Medical School of Temple University/St. Luke's Hospital & Health Network beginning in 2011. Students in the program will take "doctoring" courses, which teach professionalism, cultural, socioeconomic and ethical issues, according to a release. The hospital will begin interviewing prospective students for its new medical school, with special enrollment consideration allotted to pre-med students from Lehigh University, Moravian College and Muhlenberg College who have achieved academic excellence and are currently enrolled in the "Early Assurance" program offered through St. Luke's and Temple. St. Luke's plans to relocate the medical school to a new facility at the planned Riverside Campus in Bethlehem Township and is expected to invest $5.5 million in the new program. According to a release, St. Luke's and Temple are currently in the process of securing accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the nationally recognized accrediting authority for medical school education programs (Malone, Lehigh Valley News, 10/7/09; St. Luke's Hospital & Health Network release, 10/7/09).
