Florida Hospital Flagler, Business Group Partner to Address Nurse Shortage

Florida Hospital Flagler has teamed with the Center for Business Excellence to help address a regional shortage of nurses, the News-Journal reports. The two groups have applied for a $230,769 training grant that, if approved, would provide funding to increase the hospital's number of critical care nurses, as well as boost the number of nurses with either a bachelor's or master's degree. In addition, the funding would support the establishment of a nursing simulation lab that would train new nurses, particularly in using health information technology. Specifically, the funding is expected to provide training for 36 Flagler employees. The grant, which is part of the federal stimulus package administered by Workforce Florida, is expected to be decided by November. If approved, Florida Hospital Flagler will provide $300,955 in matching in-kind funds. Commenting on the grant, the vice president of clinical services and chief nursing officer at the hospital noted that the funding would allow current nurses to transition to more advanced practice positions and free up entry-level positions for recent nursing school graduates (Whitney, News-Journal, 10/8/09).
