Connecticut Applies for Funding to Expand State's Health Care Workforce

Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell (R) has announced that the state has applied for $5 million in federal stimulus funding to expand the state's health care workforce, the Connecticut Post reports. To be awarded over three years by the Connecticut Workforce Investment Strategies in Healthcare (WISH), the state will use the funding to provide scholarships and affordable education and to support reeducation for unemployed individuals or those in low-income jobs who are interested in pursuing nursing or other health-related careers. Specifically, $900,000 is expected to go toward the provision of scholarships and financial support for students pursuing health care careers. According to a release, the funding would allow WISH to place more than 3,200 students in 11 community college degree programs in careers including nursing, emergency medical technician, paramedics and surgical technicians. In addition, the funding would help WISH find jobs for 2,500 new health care workers and provide expanded retraining opportunities to more than 600 workers (Cuda, Connecticut Post, 10/13/09; Office of Gov. M. Jodi Rell release, 10/12/09).
