The National Institute for Nursing Research has awarded $3 million in funding to the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio for a study designed to help improve the bedside manner of the nation's nurses, the San Antonio Business Journal reports. Awarded under the National Institutes of Health's Grand Opportunities program, the two-year grant will seek to create the first national research network that focuses on improving the delivery of nursing care in hospitals. According to the lead investigator of the study, improving health care and patient safety has been a major goal of the federal government, accrediting bodies, regulatory agencies and patient-advocacy groups for the past decade. However, progress in transforming improvement research into actual actions, as this latest effort is designed to do, has been slow in the health care environment (San Antonio Business Journal, 10/13/09).
