The Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges has granted Bellingham Technical College $360,000 to help train current hospital employees for careers in high-demand health care roles including nursing assistants, R.N.s, surgical assistants, radiological and pharmacy technicians, and billing and coding specialists, the Bellingham Herald reports. The college will use the funding—in conjunction with partners Skagit Valley College, Whatcom Community College, Northwest Workforce Council and employee union SEIU Healthcare—to expand training and support programs at five hospitals in northwest Washington. The participating hospitals include St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham, Island Hospital in Anacortes, Whidbey General Hospital in Coupeville, United General Hospital in Sedro-Wolley and Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon. Specifically, the Hospital Employee Education and Training Program seeks to increase diversity, improve access to training, add mentoring opportunities and establish advisory and support systems. In addition, the college will use the funding to help restructure current training programs to improve quality. The school and its partners anticipate that the changes to employee training programs will help establish accessible career paths for hospital employees looking to advance their careers (Cox, Bellingham Herald, 10/19/09).
