New York Health Planning Group Launches Video Campaign to Entice Students to Pursue Careers in Health Care

The New York-based Fort Drum Regional Health Planning Organization has created a video that aims to encourage middle school and high school students to pursue health care careers, WWNYTV reports. The fast-paced video is designed to help recruit health care professionals in northern New York to provide care for both military and civilian populations. Specifically, the video touts the types of health care jobs available, outlines the availability of positions, and highlights the potential for promotion. According to a nursing professor at Jefferson Community College, most young people leave northern New York to pursue careers in larger markets. However, she notes that, if local schools can recruit, train and retain health care workers in the area, the severity of health care worker shortages could be reduced. To support this goal, the college has expanded its nursing program, and several other area colleges are now offer training partnerships with Upstate Medical University in Syracuse (WWNYTV, 10/19/09).
