Anticipating an uptick in demand for health care services, New York City has opened a new employment center dedicated to training and placing health care workers in jobs, the New York Times reports. According to the Times, the aging baby boomer population is expected to increase demand for care, with demand expected to increase even further if Congress approves legislation aimed at extending health insurance to a greater portion of individuals. Located at LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City, Queens, the center is the second such entity in the city to focus on a single industry, aiming specifically to assist R.N.s, home health aides and other caregivers in finding employment. The college, which has its own health care training program, will work with local health care businesses and providers to anticipate and respond to their job needs. Future plans for the center call for it to be connected to local vocational high schools so that students can acquire the skills necessary to enter directly into the workforce, according to the commissioner of the Department of Small Business Services, who has overseen adult job placement for the city since 2003 (Cardwell, New York Times, 10/23/09 [subscription required]).
