Several Arizona schools are experiencing an uptick in the number of individuals pursuing careers as health care support staff, the Arizona Republic reports. For example, officials at Pima Medical Institute in Mesa, Ariz., say a weak economy and a surge in unemployment rates are driving a spike in the number of individuals pursuing careers as medical assistants, veterinary assistants, phlebotomy technicians and nursing assistants. As part of Pima's program, students complete classroom work, participate in clinical training and enroll in an externship at a local facility. The training programs are highly regarded by local facilities, with 70 percent of graduates gaining employment in their chosen field upon graduation. Meanwhile, East Valley Institute of Technology has also reported a similar increase in interest in study tracks for trained support professionals. Currently, the institute partners with 10 East Valley high school districts to train local students. Although approximately 60 percent of students choose to use the skills learned at the institute to find a job that helps buoy their college tuition, some enter the workplace directly. The institute also offers adult-education programs, although school officials note that the majority of students are from local high schools (Hermann, Arizona Republic, 10/27/09).
