The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Health Resources and Services Administration has awarded $1.2 million to the University of Virginia School of Nursing to support its Nursing Leadership in Rural Health Care project, the News Leader reports. The funding will help prepare more nursing leaders to practice in rural health care settings or to hold leadership positions in community or public health, health system management or psychiatric mental health. To that end, in addition to traditional curriculum, students enrolled in the Master's of Science in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs will receive education in rural health care leadership and cultural competence. According to the News Leader, the monies will also be used to fund the school's existing distance education program and support faculty efforts to develop clinical training opportunities with public and private health and mental health agencies in the students' home communities (News Leader, 10/28/09).
