Alaska Lawmakers Consider Overtime Limitations for Nurses

Alaska legislators are considering a measure that would limit mandatory overtime for nurses in the state, KTUU reports. At a recent legislative meeting, lawmakers debated a House bill that would not only limit overtime, but also restrict nurses' work days to a maximum of 14 hours with a mandatory 10-hour break between work shifts. Although nurses contend that extended work hours are unmanageable, make patients more susceptible to errors and contribute to burnout, critics of the bill contend that patient care could suffer without adequate nurse staffing. Commenting on the bill, the president of the Alaska Native Health Board said that the work restrictions could prove particularly difficult among tribal organizations, where nurses are already stretched thin and it is increasingly difficult to recruit new nursing talent (Goodell, KTUU, 10/27/09).
