N.J. Hospitals Receive Funding to Implement Care Quality Improvement Effort for Nurses

The New Jersey Hospital Association's (NJHA) Institute for Quality and Patient Safety has received a $732,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to help hospitals throughout the state implement a program aimed at improving the quality of care provided by nurses, AHA News Now reports. RWJF's national Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB) program aims to provide the training and support necessary to allow nurses to spend more time with patients while increasing job satisfaction. Specifically, the TCAB initiative will provide education and training in performance improvement for frontline staff nurses so that they can identify, test and implement improvements on their units; empower staff nurses to make the changes necessary to increase the amount of time spent on direct patient care on their unit; and provide education and training for nurse managers to help them provide leadership and support to staff nurses. In New Jersey, the American Organization of Nurse Executives will train participating hospitals in the tenets of the TCAB program. To date, 47 New Jersey hospitals have agreed to participate in the program's first learning session. According to AHA News Now, 52 hospitals nationwide are participating in the program (AHA News Now, 10/28/09; NJHA release, 10/28/09).
