Pittsburgh-based Robert Morris University has announced it will begin offering a surgical technologist program, the Beacon-News reports. To be offered at the school's new Nursing and Health Sciences facility at its DuPage campus in Aurora, the program will provide hands-on experience in a simulated operating room (OR) environment. Each state-of-the-art OR lab includes a scrub area, operating table, surgical mannequin, heart-rate monitors, laparoscopy video monitors, anesthesia machines, and other technologies and tools. As part of their training, students rotate through different roles in the surgical team to gain a full understanding of all roles and responsibilities. The remaining surgical technician coursework incorporates a heavy science curriculum that includes human anatomy, human cadaver dissection and biology (Beacon-News, 11/4/09).
