In conjunction with the RWJF Prescription for Health Program, three health behavior and measurement experts surveyed the literature and talked with leading researchers to identify practical and relevant measures of four key health behaviors (physical activity, risky drinking, cigarette smoking, and eating patterns) for use in primary care research. Primary criteria for measure selection included: practicality, relationship to clinical and public health goals, validity, sensitivity to change and relation to behavioral intervention. Secondary criteria included: cultural and literacy issues, norms and breadth of use, age appropriateness, reliability, and usability for feedback and interventions. These criteria and the recommended assessments were reviewed by an expert panel of researchers and practitioners. Standardization of measures is critically important to begin to make comparisons across different intervention strategies, clinic settings and population types.
