  • Is Support for Traditionally Designed Communities Growing? Evidence from Two National Surveys

Public support for traditionally designed communities increased between 2003 and 2005. In contrast to suburban development, traditionally designed communities offer environmental and health benefits.

What researchers found: Support for traditionally designed communities (those with mixed-land use) was strong across most populations and may provide support for policies in favor of these types of communities. Traditionally designed communities were perceived as being good for children and the elderly. Support for traditionally designed communities increased from 44 percent of respondents in 2003 to 59 percent of respondents in 2005. Support was strong among all groups of respondents except those from rural areas.

Why we chose this publication: By surveying the public on their support of environmental and social factors related to traditionally designed communities, this study’s findings reveal that child-friendly areas and places conducive to independent living by the elderly are the dominant priorities among surveyed adults. Concerns over diminished space and the limited support by rural residents illustrate areas which need to be considered as policy-makers and community planners explore the development of traditionally designed communities.

What researchers studied: The authors used data from two national surveys that asked consumers about the degree to which they would support the development of a traditionally designed community in their area. The first survey of 5,873 respondents was conducted in 2003. The second survey of 12,630 respondents was conducted in 2005.
