Kansas Health Department Receives Federal Funding to Examine Impact of Environment on Health

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has received a $3 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to assess the environment's impact on public health, the Kansas City Business Journal reports. Specifically, the department will use the funding to develop an Environmental Health Tracking Network that will track data on environmental health hazards and public health problems in the state. The Kansas City Business Journal notes that 16 other states are currently collecting similar data that will eventually be compiled, along with data from Kansas, to increase understanding of the factors that influence, and could potentially prevent, chronic illness (Kansas City Business Journal, 9/16/09; Kansas Department of Health and Environment release, 9/15/09).
