The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has made $373 million in grants available for chronic disease prevention and wellness programs, AHA News Now reports. Provided as part of $650 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding made available for chronic disease prevention, the funding will support the Communities Putting Prevention to Work initiative, which seeks to reduce risk factors associated with chronic disease, promote wellness among children and adults, and support "positive, sustainable health change in communities," according to HHS. Specifically, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention will support evidence-based community approaches to chronic disease prevention in select communities that make efforts to increase physical activity levels, improve nutrition, and decrease rates of overweight and obesity. In addition, part of the initiative will focus on reducing tobacco use and exposure to second-hand smoke. Funding will be awarded to communities through a competitive selection process (AHA News Now, 9/17/09; HHS Web site).
