New Jersey, New York Lawmakers Propose Smoking Bans at Beaches, Parks

New Jersey and New York lawmakers have separately proposed measures that would ban smoking at public beaches and parks, the Associated Press reports. New Jersey Sen. Barbara Buono (D-18) plans to introduce legislation when the Senate reconvenes later this year that would prohibit smoking at all state, county and municipal parks and beaches. Currently, the shore towns of Belmar and Seaside Heights limit smoking to designated areas on beaches, and Belmar is considering expanding this ban to include the entire beach and boardwalk. Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has requested that his administration study the feasibility of banning smoking at the city's public beaches and parks. According to the AP, smoking in parks is currently prohibited in several counties and cities in California, Louisiana, Maine and Utah (Spolar and Urgo, Philadelphia Inquirer, 9/17/09; Kugler, AP/Long Island Newsday, 9/14/09; Office of Sen. Barbara Buono release, 9/17/09).
